Artist Statement

My gestural abstract paintings are like carefully composed songs or poetry made visible.

I orchestrate contour lines; their weights and shapes serve as elements in a composition, much like notes that form a melody. I observe the fragility of a linear element as it interacts with blocks of color, creating tender narrative moments.

I purposefully incorporate seemingly empty space as a compositional element that allows the eye and psyche to breathe. My own mind requires ample “white space” to think, germinate ideas, and decompress. Just as in music, the space (or “rests”) around the marks is as important as the marks themselves.

My color choices are instinctual, driven by a yearning for moments of intense, perhaps “loud” saturation juxtaposed with muted, “quiet” neutral tones. We cannot have the quiet without the loud, just as we cannot have light without dark. As these hues dance, they create an energetic vibration—a mood unique to each viewer.

The end result is a one-of-a-kind harmonious visual concerto that is both dynamic and rare.

Welcome!

Megan Carty describes her abstract expressionist paintings as “visual poems that illustrate the human lived experience.” Our inner-beings are both beautiful AND flawed. In our lives’ journeys, we experience celebrations, achievements, love, and joy. In contrast, we also experience losses, injustices, abuses, and sadness. We are both given TO and taken FROM. Carty aims to document this dichotomy of random moments in time using specific colors, open space, and line. She pulls her mark making inspiration from plants and flowers, as they are the ultimate symbols of continuous growth, death, and renewal.
